The Chengdu Panda Base takes online real-name reservations up to 14 days ahead, splits entry into morning and afternoon periods, and publishes an adult ticket price of CNY 55; an afternoon booking does not entitle the holder to arrive in the morning

Chengdu Attraction Booking: Pandas First, Then Everything Else
Chengdu's big sights run on real-name reservations, morning and afternoon entry periods, and a passport that has to match the booking character for character. Book in the wrong order — or through the wrong seller — and the day unravels at the gate.
01 · IN BRIEF
The gate is where bad bookings go to be found out
It is not yet eight in the morning outside the Panda Base, and the queue already has a casualty. A traveller is holding up a phone showing a confirmation from a reseller neither guard has heard of, booked under a nickname, for the afternoon period — while his friends, who booked properly, are disappearing through the entrance with their passports out. Nobody is being unkind. The guard points at the name on the booking, then at the passport, then at the line of people behind him who did this part right. The pandas, somewhere up the hill among the bamboo, are at their most awake and active of the entire day, and one member of this group is about to miss it because of a form filled in carelessly three weeks earlier.
Chengdu rewards people who treat tickets as logistics rather than admin. The Panda Base sells real-name reservations in morning and afternoon periods. The museums run their own reservation systems with their own closure days. Sanxingdui, out in Guanghan, is as much a transport problem as a ticket. This guide lays out the order to book in, the checks that actually matter, and the failure modes that catch foreign visitors out — so the only surprise at the gate is how early you are.

The booking order, scarcest first
- First — Chengdu Panda Base: real-name reservation, morning period, as soon as your date opens inside the 14-day window
- Second — Sanxingdui or a limited-date museum: its own reservation rules, checked on its own official site, never borrowed from the panda rules
- Third — Leshan, Dujiangyan or Qingchengshan: admission plus the rail, boat or cableway decisions that come attached to it
- Any time — parks, temples and old neighbourhoods: the flexible layer that absorbs whatever the anchors leave behind
- Check card — Panda Base: correct park, correct visitor category, date and period on the booking, passport in hand on the day
- Check card — Chengdu Museum: current visitor notice, closure day and identity requirement read on the museum's own site shortly before you go
- Check card — Sanxingdui: a confirmed ticket plus an end-to-end transport plan form a single purchase decision, not two
- Check card — Day trips: a station arrival is not an attraction arrival; price the last transfer before you commit to the date

04 · THE PROOF
The booking facts this guide leans on
Passports are among the original identity documents the Panda Base accepts, and the document carried on the day must match the visitor details recorded in the booking
Checked October 2026Under the operator's current visitor notice, the No. 6 Giant Panda Villa closes on Mondays (statutory holidays excepted) under a rotational rest pilot, the Panda Art Museum also closes on Mondays for maintenance, and the Bamboo Tower can close when weather turns adverse
Checked October 2026The Chengdu Museum publishes its own visitor notices and exhibition information, and its reservation system, its closure pattern and its document rules are set independently of the Panda Base and can change between announcement and visit
Checked October 2026Sanxingdui operates its own reservation and opening notices; a visit there requires confirming admission and the complete end-to-end journey in one decision, and Panda Base windows or document rules do not carry over to it
Checked October 2026A paid fast-track or guaranteed-entry claim from a third-party seller is not an official exemption from real-name identity checks, and refunds or changes run through whichever channel originally took the booking
Checked October 2026Local accounts consistently favour early visits because pandas tend to be livelier in cooler conditions, though no entry period guarantees any particular animal will be awake, outdoors or performing
Checked October 2026For Leshan, Dujiangyan and Qingchengshan, admission is only one component: stations, local transfer services, river boats, cable cars and walking routes each carry their own booking or timing decision

The booking workflow, step by step
- Step 1 — Reserve the anchor: the Panda Base, morning period
Everything in a Chengdu itinerary hangs off this booking, so make it first and make it carefully. Work inside the operator's authorised channels, choose the Panda Base itself — not a similarly named panda site or a bundled tour product — and take the morning entry period on your preferred date as soon as it appears inside the booking window. The morning slot is the scarce resource in this whole system: it holds the coolest hours, the most active animals and the calmest enclosures. If the trip has any flexibility, let the panda date choose which day is which, and fit the rest of Chengdu around it.
- Step 2 — Enter the passport details exactly, then stop touching them
Real-name reservation means the booking is a small legal document, not a rough note. Enter each visitor's name in the order and spelling printed in the passport, the full document number, and the correct visitor category. A nickname, a middle name dropped for tidiness, a transposed digit — each is the kind of mismatch that surfaces at the worst possible moment, in a queue, with staff who cannot override it. Screenshot the confirmation, keep the booking reachable offline, and carry the same original passport on the day. If the official form cannot process your details, go to the operator for help rather than improvising a version of your name that the gate will not recognise.
- Step 3 — Add the second anchor under its own rules
With the pandas fixed, book the trip's second scarce item: Sanxingdui or a high-demand museum slot. The discipline here is separation. Each attraction publishes its own reservation window, its own closure pattern and its own document rules, and none of them inherit anything from the Panda Base. Read the attraction's own official notice, confirm the date still makes sense against a realistic panda morning — not the optimistic version where you leave the base at ten — and only then commit. If the second anchor is unavailable, the correct response is a slower central afternoon among parks and teahouses, not two overlapping bookings bought from unrelated sellers in a panic.
- Step 4 — Treat day trips as ticket plus transport, one problem
Leshan's Buddha, the Dujiangyan irrigation works and the temples of Qingchengshan all sit beyond the city, and the ticket is the easy half. Before paying, lay out the whole chain: city departure point, rail or road leg, the station-to-site transfer that brochures forget to mention, any boat or cableway the route assumes, and the return connection that gets you back at an hour you can live with. A train arriving at a station named after a sight is not arrival at the sight. Book the pieces in an order that keeps the scarce admission at the centre and the flexible transport wrapped around it.
- Step 5 — Match entrance, transport and first hour to the booking
A confirmed ticket still leaves one decision that shapes the visit: which entrance, and therefore which first hour. The Panda Base is a large, spread-out park, not a single enclosure with a gift shop. From the current visitor map, pick the gate that fits your transport and your priorities, decide whether the sightseeing bus genuinely helps your weakest walker or merely swaps walking for queuing, and sketch a single-direction route through several viewing areas instead of camping at the first famous enclosure. Groups that refuse to leave one celebrity panda routinely spend the best of the morning watching the back of a sleeping animal while quieter enclosures empty out.
- Step 6 — Build the panda morning backwards, and protect the afternoon
Start from the entry period and work backwards: gate arrival with a margin, the ride out, the hotel departure, the alarm. Then look at what follows and keep it soft. Lunch stays flexible, the afternoon holds things that forgive lateness — a central park, a teahouse session, a neighbourhood wander. Do not promise children a named panda or a specific behaviour; the honest goal is a wander through several lively enclosures while energy and attention are high, stopping while the visit is still good. A Chengdu day built this way bends when weather, closures or a sleepy enclosure push on it. A day built on stacked timed entries snaps.
- Step 7 — Recheck everything 24 to 48 hours out
The last step is a short audit, done a day or two before each visit rather than the night before the flight. Reopen the official notices for every anchor: closure days, weather-sensitive structures, changed entry channels, shuttle or route alterations. Confirm the passport is in the bag you are actually carrying. Confirm the cancellation route for anything you might drop — changes are processed through the channel that sold the ticket, under the terms of the product you bought. Then stop planning. The system this guide describes is deliberately boring at the gate, and boring at the gate is what a good panda morning feels like.
06 · WHERE THIS BREAKS
Where bookings still go wrong
The reliable route into the Panda Base is the official real-name reservation, with the original document checked against it. Same-day availability is a hope, not a strategy, and building a short trip around it risks the single most wanted morning of the visit. If a date matters, it gets booked inside the window, through authorised channels, under the passport's real name.
A third-party checkout completing successfully proves money moved; it does not prove a valid real-name reservation exists. Unknown resellers, listings that promise to bypass identity checks, and prices frozen from an old social post all fail at the same place — the entrance, on the day, in front of your group. Verify the seller is an authorised channel and that the confirmation carries the correct park, date, period and document details.
Booking windows, closure days, document rules and refund terms are set per attraction and change independently. The Panda Base's 14-day window says nothing about Sanxingdui's. The museum that was closed on your last trip's Monday may have changed its pattern. Every anchor in the itinerary gets its own check on its own official site, close to the visit.
A morning ticket buys the best statistical conditions, not a performance. Pandas sleep through fame, weather empties enclosures, and a particular celebrity may be off display. Trips organised around one named animal and one expected behaviour disappoint children precisely as designed. Organise around the route, the variety of enclosures and the morning itself, and anything the animals add becomes a gift rather than a debt.
The instinct to stay at the best-known villa until something happens is the most common way visitors burn their best hour. Viewing areas differ in crowd pressure across the morning, and local visitors redistribute constantly. Keep moving on a one-way route, let quieter enclosures have their chance, and return later only if the route naturally loops back — attention is a budget, and the base spends it faster than expected.
The CNY 55 adult price, the 14-day window and the Monday closures in this guide describe the operator's published position as checked in October 2026. Operators revise all three, sometimes with little notice. Treat every number here as a reason to check the official page, not as a substitute for checking it — the attraction's own channels are the last word on the day you travel.
