Guangdong AI Travel Card: a field guide for landing at CAN or SZX

Guangdong’s AI Travel Card, branded “Discover Guangdong with AI”, is a physical Yang Cheng Tong (羊城通) transit card plus a QR path into multilingual AI travel tools.

It is aimed at international visitors who want a simpler first move after landing in Guangzhou or Shenzhen—not a national payment-app replacement.

What it is

Launch and branding

On 19 October 2026, Guangdong launched the card at Chikan Overseas Chinese Ancient Town in Jiangmen.

Official English coverage describes a Yang Cheng Tong public-transport card combined with online travel services, with Lingnan-culture artwork (lion dancing, Cantonese opera, morning tea, and similar icons).

Transit layer

  • Preloaded with ¥30.
  • Usable for bus and metro across Guangdong’s 21 cities.

AI / digital layer

Scan the card’s QR code to reach Trip Genie AI in more than 14 languages for:

  • Translation
  • Itinerary planning
  • Hotel comparisons

The same platform also links to booking services for hotels, attractions, and flights, and surfaces information on tax refunds, shopping discounts, and visa-free policies.

Naming note (Trip.com — once)

Primary wording follows the Guangdong Foreign Affairs Office English page, which names Trip Genie AI.

A South / NewsGD English report on the same launch describes the digital assistant as Trip.com’s AI travel assistant. Treat that as a named-platform attribution from that source—not a booking tip.

ChinaMate does not add Trip.com affiliate links.

Who it’s for

Audience (as stated): international visitors exploring Guangdong / the Greater Bay Area.

Free stock: the first 10,000 cards will be distributed free of charge.

When

  • FAO English: from late November
  • South / NewsGD: mid- to late November 2026

Practical write-up: plan for mid- to late November 2026, with FAO’s “late November” as the conservative end of that window.

Where to pick it up

Dedicated counters in the international arrival areas of:

  • Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (CAN)
  • Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport (SZX)

Neither English page publishes counter hours, passport rules, or a per-person limit beyond the 10,000 free batch.

What it can and cannot do

Can (per official English pages)

Capability Detail
Bus + metro in Guangdong Across the province’s 21 cities on the Yang Cheng Tong base
Starter transit credit ¥30 preloaded
Multilingual AI helper Trip Genie AI, 14+ languages: translation, itinerary, hotel compare
Booking / info links Hotels, attractions, flights; tax-refund / shopping-discount / visa-free information

Cannot / do not assume

  • Not a province-wide substitute for Alipay / WeChat Pay at shops and restaurants.
  • Not a national China travel card — transit claim is Guangdong’s 21 cities, not every Chinese metro.
  • Free cards are a limited first batch (10,000) — treat stock as finite.
  • English pages do not confirm top-up after ¥30, phone OS support, or whether the QR flow needs a Chinese SIM / foreign number.

How: landing at CAN or SZX

Field steps

  1. Before you fly. Confirm arrival at Baiyun (CAN) or Bao’an (SZX) international arrivals, and that free distribution has started (target: mid- to late November 2026). Keep a backup metro/bus plan—do not make the free card your only transfer option.

  2. After immigration / baggage. Look for dedicated counters in the international arrival area. Ask for the Guangdong AI Travel Card / “Discover Guangdong with AI” (羊城通 base). Official English pages do not list required ID beyond “international travelers”—bring your passport and follow staff instructions.

  3. Ride. Use the physical card for bus and metro where Yang Cheng Tong is accepted across Guangdong’s 21 cities. Start with the ¥30 credit for airport-to-city or early city hops.

  4. Scan the QR. Open Trip Genie AI for translation, itinerary help, and hotel comparisons. Use linked booking/info pages when you need hotels, attractions, flights, tax-refund, or visa-free notes. Prefer payment setups you already trust (ChinaMate Pay · Connect · Move).

  5. Fallback. If counters are closed, stock is gone, or the QR flow fails, switch to airport metro/bus machines, taxi/ride-hail, and your usual payment + eSIM setup.

Access reality

Three labeled cards: Guangdong AI Travel Card vs 数智畅行卡 vs CUBe / 幂方卡
Same visitor-friction problem; not the same products (different cities, banks, form factors).

Not the same as 数智畅行卡 or CUBe / 幂方卡

Do not confuse this Guangdong leisure card with other visitor “one-card” products:

  • 数智畅行卡 (Shuzhi Changxing Card) — Agricultural Bank of China × Canton Fair e-CNY hard wallet for fair / inbound business convenience. Different issuer and purpose.
  • CUBe Card / 幂方卡 — Bank of China Beijing product (SIM-linked communication + digital yuan + Beijing transit framing). A Beijing landing tool, not the Guangdong airport free-card programme.

Same problem space (foreign visitor friction); different cities, banks, and form factors.
