Internet & eSIM in China (2026): Roaming, Travel eSIM, Local SIM and Wi-Fi Compared

Your phone will work in China. The real question is which internet it connects to — every connectivity choice is a choice between two exits.

01 · IN BRIEF

The one thing to understand first: where your data exits

A connection in China can leave through a domestic exit (the Great Firewall applies: Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, Gmail and YouTube are blocked) or a foreign exit (traffic is handed to a network outside the mainland first, and the blocks never touch it).

Travel eSIMs and home-carrier roaming use a foreign exit. Local SIMs and hotel Wi-Fi always use a domestic exit. Coverage and speed are not the deciding factor — the exit is.

02 · SEE IT

Four options, two internets

  1. Travel eSIM — foreign exit — blocked apps work on mobile data
  2. International roaming — foreign exit — blocked apps typically work, at roaming prices
  3. Local SIM — domestic exit — cheap and fast, behind the firewall
  4. Hotel / café Wi-Fi — domestic exit — a VPN is the backup layer

05 · STEP BY STEP

The decision, in one pass

  1. One to two weeks, first trip

Buy a fixed-data travel eSIM at home, install it, keep your home SIM active for SMS codes, and land connected — total under $15.

  2. Short business trip, company pays

Use home-carrier roaming; double-check the daily rate and auto-enrolment in your carrier's app first.

  3. A month or more, or rural travel

Get a local SIM at a carrier store (passport required), with a VPN installed beforehand as backup — or a travel eSIM alongside it for home apps.

06 · WHERE THIS BREAKS

The catches

Data-only

Travel eSIMs have no Chinese phone number and no SMS — that is why your home SIM stays in the phone.

Domestic eSIM is not a visitor option yet

Mainland carrier eSIM exists since October 2025, but Apple lists only mainland-sold iPhone Air (A3518) and iPhone 17e (A3635) as able to install mainland eSIM profiles.

Unlimited is throttled

'Unlimited' weekly plans throttle after a daily cap (Airalo about 1 Mbps after 3 GB/day; Nomad after 2 GB/day).
