Hongqiao Airport (SHA) Arrival Guide: Terminals, Metro Lines 2 and 10, Taxis, and the Train Station Next Door

Shanghai's close-in airport hides inside a giant transport hub: the ride into town is the easiest of any big Chinese airport — the skill is picking the right terminal, line and corridor.

01 · IN BRIEF

Your next train leaves from the same building

You touch down at Hongqiao at 4:20 in the afternoon, and your train to Suzhou leaves at 5:35 — from a station that is, on paper, part of the same complex you just landed in. The walk takes about ten minutes if you follow the railway signs, and most of the departure board if you follow the crowd toward the metro instead. Hongqiao is where Shanghai arrivals stop being an expedition and start being a corridor — but it is a very large corridor, with two terminals, two metro lines and a railway station all answering to the same name.

The short version: this is the easiest airport arrival in urban China. The airport sits about 13 km from People's Square, both terminals plug straight into the metro, and the high-speed rail station is next door — genuinely useful if you are landing in Shanghai but sleeping in Suzhou, Hangzhou or Nanjing. Everything in this guide is about not wasting that head start.

Before you move, settle three things: which airport code is on your ticket (SHA here, PVG across the city), which terminal you are standing in, and which side of town your first bed is on. Those three answers pick your route more reliably than any single fastest-train claim, because the real journey also includes immigration, the baggage belt, station corridors, a ticket gate, and the final walk or ride from the last station to your hotel door.

Quick decision table and the hub at a glance

  1. Decision row — First visit, big suitcases, long flight behind you: official taxi or a pre-booked private car, door to door
  2. Decision row — Solo traveller, daytime landing, one bag: Metro Line 2 or Line 10, or the Airport Link if you are crossing toward Pudong
  3. Decision row — Hotel near People's Square or Nanjing Road: Line 2 runs direct, simple even if the ride is not the city's fastest
  4. Decision row — Hotel in the Former French Concession, Xujiahui or Jing'an: Hongqiao is the easy airport; from PVG, pair rail with a taxi
  5. Decision row — Travelling onward between PVG and SHA: check the Airport Link rail first before booking a cross-city taxi
  6. Decision row — Landing at Pudong late at night: pre-arranged car, the official taxi rank, or a verified night airport bus, in that order of certainty
  7. Decision row — Children, older relatives, a stroller: cut changes to the minimum — taxi, private car, or rail for the long leg plus a short taxi hop
  8. Terminal 2: most flights — Metro Lines 2 and 10 below, railway station a walk through the hub
  9. Terminal 1: smaller and older — Metro Line 10 at the terminal; Line 2 lives over at Terminal 2
  10. Metro Line 2 to People's Square and Lujiazui: roughly 35–40 min
  11. Metro Line 10 to Xintiandi and the Former French Concession side: roughly 40 min
  12. Taxi to the central districts: roughly 30–45 min, around ¥60–100 in normal traffic
  13. High-speed rail from Hongqiao Station: Suzhou ~30 min, Hangzhou ~1 hour, Beijing ~4.5–5.5 hours
  14. Airport Link to Pudong Airport: about 40 min, ¥26 — also the practical rail route toward the Disney side of Pudong

The facts that shape the arrival

Hongqiao has two terminals: Terminal 2 handles the large majority of flights, while Terminal 1 is smaller and serves a limited set of domestic and short-haul international routes

Checked October 2026
Reference ~

Metro Line 10 stops at both Hongqiao Terminal 1 and Hongqiao Terminal 2 stations; Line 2 serves Terminal 2 and the adjacent Hongqiao Railway Station, but not Terminal 1

Checked October 2026

Hongqiao Railway Station is part of the same transport hub as Terminal 2 — roughly a 10-minute indoor walk through the hub, or one stop on Metro Lines 2 or 10

Checked October 2026
Reference ~

The airport is about 13 km west of People's Square, roughly a third of the distance from the center compared with Pudong

Checked October 2026
Estimate ≈

A taxi from Hongqiao into the central districts typically costs around ¥60–100 and takes 30–45 minutes in normal traffic

Checked October 2026

High-speed trains from Hongqiao Railway Station reach Suzhou in about 30 minutes and Hangzhou in about an hour; Beijing takes roughly 4.5–5.5 hours depending on the train

Checked October 2026

The Airport Link Line starts at the Hongqiao hub and crosses the city to Pudong Airport in about 40 minutes for ¥26 — the fastest public route between Shanghai's two airports

Checked October 2026

Hongqiao is the comfortable choice for a central-Shanghai start: for hotels around People's Square, Jing'an, the Former French Concession, Xujiahui or Hongqiao itself, landing at SHA typically saves both time and decisions compared with Pudong

Checked October 2026

Pudong (PVG) sits far enough east that the transfer is a planning item in its own right: its four inbound options are Metro Line 2, the Airport Link / city rail, the maglev to Longyang Road, and road transfer by taxi or private car

Checked October 2026
Reference ~

Between PVG and Longyang Road the maglev covers the hop in about 8 minutes, but Longyang is a place you change at, not a place you stay — nearly everyone continues by metro or cab from there

Checked October 2026
Reference ~

The Airport Link / city rail gives the Pudong–Hongqiao corridor fewer stops than the ordinary metro and more room for luggage, with intermediate access that also serves Disney and southern Pudong trips

Checked October 2026
Estimate ≈

One suitcase rides the metro comfortably; several suitcases, a stroller, or a rush-hour departure turn each interchange into real effort, which is why rail for the long leg plus a short taxi is a standard local pattern

Checked October 2026
Reference ~

Once metro service ends, Pudong travellers fall back on night buses running into town, then a cab for the remaining distance; at Hongqiao the after-dark question is whether anything is still running at all, and longer or special-date metro hours are exceptions, not the normal timetable

Checked October 2026

Local traveller posts about Shanghai arrivals cluster on the same friction points: signage after baggage claim, how to buy the ticket, which payment works, last-train risk, and how the final kilometre to the hotel actually feels

05 · STEP BY STEP

Landing at Hongqiao, step by step

  1. Pick your airport by first hotel, not by flight alone

If the timetable gives you a real choice, Hongqiao suits a centre-based trip: it feeds Metro Lines 2 and 10, the railway station, and the Airport Link. Pudong may still win on the long-haul flight itself — then treat its transfer as part of the ticket price and plan it before you board, not after you land.

  2. Do door-to-door maths, not headline-train maths

Add every piece before judging a route: passport control, baggage claim, the walk inside the hub, buying or loading the ticket, any interchange, lift queues, and the last stretch from station to hotel. A route that looks slower on a timetable often wins once those pieces are counted.

  3. Name your terminal before you move

Your boarding pass and the arrivals screens tell you T1 or T2. Everything branches from this: T2 has both metro lines and the railway walk; T1 has Line 10 outside its door and everything else a stop or a shuttle ride away.

  4. Choose your metro line by hotel, not by habit

Line 2 runs east through People's Square to Lujiazui and on toward Pudong — right for the Bund side and Pudong hotels. Line 10 angles through the Former French Concession and Xintiandi side and serves the southwest and northeast districts. Tap a foreign bank card or open your Shanghai transport QR at the gates, exactly as at any city station.

  5. Know what Pudong would have given you (and why it is not here)

From PVG the menu is Line 2 all the way across town, the Airport Link toward Hongqiao, the maglev hop to Longyang Road, or the road. None of that applies at Hongqiao except the Airport Link — if a friend lands at PVG the same day, do not swap instructions; the two airports reward different plans.

  6. Take the maglev only when Longyang Road helps

The maglev is a Pudong-only experience: roughly 8 minutes of very fast train, then a change. Ride it when Longyang Road sits on your route or the ride itself is the point. Skip it when the change afterwards makes the journey longer or harder than metro, Airport Link, or a car — especially with heavy bags.

  7. Walking to the railway station (from T2)

Follow the 'Railway Station' signs through the hub — stay inside, keep moving in the same direction, and budget about ten minutes of walking plus station security and the passport check at the gates. Arrive at the station at least 30 minutes before your train; the departure hall is big and gates close a few minutes before departure.

  8. From T1, don't walk to the trains

Terminal 1 sits apart from the main hub. Ride Metro Line 10 one stop to Terminal 2 (or two to the railway station), or take a taxi around. Walking the full distance with luggage is the classic Hongqiao rookie mistake.

  9. Use rail for distance, taxi for the last stretch

The underrated pattern for families and older travellers: let a train eat the kilometres, then hand the last streets to a taxi that stops at the exact door. From Hongqiao, ride the metro when your hotel sits straight on Line 10 or Line 2; switch to a taxi when the hotel needs a change of line plus a long walk.

  10. Taxi when the metro math fails

Official ranks serve both terminals. Jing'an, Xujiahui and French Concession hotels are all short, cheap rides from here — with luggage, late at night, or in a group of three, the taxi often beats the metro on total effort. Show the address in Chinese characters and take the official queue only.

  11. Run the late-night version of the plan

After dark, stop optimising and start removing risk. Choose while still in the air: a pre-booked car, the official taxi queue, or a verified night bus plus a shorter taxi. Keep the hotel address saved in English and in Chinese characters, keep payment and battery in reserve, and walk past anyone inside the terminal offering an unlicensed ride.

  12. Crossing to Pudong Airport

If your trip continues from PVG, do not take a taxi across the whole city by default. The Airport Link from the Hongqiao hub reaches Pudong Airport in about 40 minutes; a road transfer can take twice that in traffic. Keep a generous buffer either way — airlines count misconnections unsentimentally.

  13. Do not mirror this plan for your departure

The best arrival route is not automatically the best way back, especially for an early flight. Check the reverse direction — first trains, check-in deadlines, which terminal your airline actually uses — as its own decision before your last night.

06 · WHERE THIS BREAKS

When the easy airport bites back

Tight flight-to-train connections

'Same building' is a walk, not a teleport. A delayed flight, a slow baggage belt, hub crowds and station security stack up — under 60 minutes between landing and train departure is gambling, and under 45 is usually lost. Book the later train; changing tickets on 12306 is cheaper than missing them.

Terminal confusion

T1 and T2 have different metro stations, taxi ranks and ride-hailing pickup points. Friends, drivers and tour pickups waiting at the wrong terminal is Hongqiao's signature failure — always state the terminal in the plan.

Late-night arrivals

Metro service winds down around 22:30–23:00 depending on line and station. After that it is taxis and limited night buses, and the Terminal 1 side gets quiet fast. Land late with an early train and you may do better sleeping near the hub than crossing town twice.

Holiday-peak hub crowds

During Golden Week and Spring Festival the hub's walks stop being 10 minutes. Corridors, security lines and ticket gates all slow down — add buffer to every number in this guide.

Line 2 into town at rush hour

You board near the start of the line, so you will get a seat — but the train fills fast, and with big suitcases the ride to People's Square can feel long. Line 10 or a taxi may be kinder depending on your hotel.

Schedules change

First and last trains, Airport Link times and even which airlines use which terminal shift over time. Everything here is a planning figure — verify metro and rail times on Shanghai Metro and 12306 on the day you travel.

FAQ — How far is Pudong Airport, really?

Far — plan on it. The trains and buses work well, but the ride eats a real slice of the day, above all after a long international flight; with a Puxi hotel, judge every option by the time it takes to reach your door, never by the train leg alone.

FAQ — Is Hongqiao better than Pudong?

For central Shanghai, usually. Hongqiao is closer and simpler to leave. Pudong is not a worse airport — it simply carries more long-haul routes and asks more of your transfer planning.

FAQ — Does the maglev make sense from Pudong?

Ride it when Longyang Road already sits on your route, or purely for the fun of it. Leave it when the change afterwards complicates the trip more than the metro, the Airport Link, a taxi or a booked car would.

FAQ — Metro with suitcases: workable?

Yes, with timing and route chosen sensibly. One suitcase is manageable almost anywhere; several cases, a stroller, or rush hour pushes the comfortable answer toward a taxi, a private car, or rail plus a short taxi at the end.

FAQ — My flight lands after midnight — what then?

Plan it before you fly, from current official information: night-bus routes, taxi supply and pre-booked cars all change, and working from a stranger's old post is how travellers end up stranded. When anything is unclear, a hotel-arranged car or the official rank removes the guesswork.

FAQ — Which airport suits the city centre best?

Hongqiao, for most central stays: People's Square, the Former French Concession, Xujiahui and Jing'an all sit on its side of the map. Pudong earns its keep on long-haul arrivals, provided the transfer is planned.

FAQ — Easiest route from Pudong into the centre?

With bags and a first visit, a booked car or the official taxi rank. On rails, match the three options — Airport Link, Line 2, maglev plus a change — to the station nearest your hotel, and check that day's timetable rather than a guide's memory of it.

FAQ — Is public transport an option late at night?

Sometimes. Night airport buses exist, and metro hours stretch on selected dates, but neither should be assumed after a late landing — check the actual service for your arrival date and keep a taxi fallback.

FAQ — Is the maglev worth it?

It can be, as an experience or when Longyang Road is genuinely useful. With heavy luggage it is often not the simplest choice, because a further metro ride, taxi, or hotel transfer still waits at the other end.

Visa-free entries change the stakes

If your itinerary depends on ordinary visa-free entry or the 240-hour visa-free transit, confirm that your passport and routing actually qualify before building a layover around it — a wrong assumption surfaces at the check-in desk, not in Shanghai.

Unlicensed drivers inside the terminal

Anyone approaching you in arrivals with a ride offer is not the official system. Use the marked taxi rank, a booked car, or the metro; the saving they promise is rarely real once the meter story changes.
