Chimelong Ocean Kingdom, Zhuhai: Five World Records, One Whale Shark Tank — and the Records, Dated

Five world records with their dates on, a 22.7-million-litre whale shark tank, passport tickets and an intercity station eight minutes from the gate: the busiest non-Disney, non-Universal park on earth, landed honestly.

The short answer

Most theme parks open with a ribbon, a speech and a hope. Chimelong Ocean Kingdom opened in Hengqin, Zhuhai, in March 2014 with a measuring tape. Within days of the official opening, Guinness World Records certified five world records in this one park at the same time: the world's largest aquarium, the world's largest aquarium tank, the world's largest viewing window, the world's largest acrylic panel and the world's largest underwater viewing dome. Over the entrance stood the park's own summary of itself — a blue whale shark statue some 63 metres tall, roughly eighteen storeys, watching over a main tank holding 22.7 million litres of seawater and, in the opening years, several living whale sharks.

Here is the part the brochures skip, and this guide will not: two of those crowns have already left. In 2023 the park's own sister attraction in the same resort, Chimelong Spaceship, opened bigger — and took the world's-largest-aquarium and largest-single-tank titles with it. What remains at Ocean Kingdom is still one of the largest single aquarium tanks on the planet, the 2015 Thea Award pedigree no Chinese park had earned before it, and — on the industry's own count — more visitors in 2024 than any theme park in the world that is not run by Disney or Universal. This guide lands it properly: the right day type, a ticket your passport can actually buy, the intercity train that stops eight minutes from the gate, and the records read with their dates on.

The day, in the order it actually happens

01

Booking — one-day ticket, real-name, against your passport, at the day-type price your date carries

02

Arrival — intercity train into Zhuhai Changlong station, then 8–10 minutes on foot to the gate

03

10:00 — gates open; walk straight to the Whale Shark Aquarium while the tour groups are still arriving

04

Late morning — Parrot Coaster (1.32–1.95 m) and the headline rides while the aquariums fill

05

Midday — shows and indoor halls through the heat, timed off the day's official performance sheet

06

Afternoon — a second, quieter pass at the whale shark tank; different light, different crowd

07

Evening — fireworks over the central lake, included in the ticket, weather permitting

08

20:00 — park closes; resort shuttles run on towards the hotels, the intercity station runs on towards Guangzhou

09

By visitor — aquarium-first: the whale shark hall twice and the exhibits deep, rides as filler · thrill-first: three coasters before the zones start closing · toddlers: free under 1.0 m, so let the shows carry the day

The park, landed step by step

STEP 1Choose the day type before the channel

Chimelong prices the same park by the kind of day it is. Regular days — most weekdays and some weekends — carry the ¥395 standard ticket; specific days — most weekends, holidays, school breaks and special-event days — carry ¥450; peak days are priced separately inside the booking system. Child, senior and concession tickets move ¥280 to ¥315 across the same split, and youth tickets ¥315 to ¥360. Family bundles exist (published 2026 tables list 1 adult + 1 child at ¥675 regular / ¥765 specific, and 2 adults + 1 child at ¥1,070 / ¥1,215), but bundle prices are snapshots — the official ticket page and the checkout in front of you are the authority.

STEP 2Book against a document you will actually carry

Buy through the official system — the Chimelong website, the Chimelong Tourism app or WeChat mini-programme, the resort's ticket desks or the official hotline — or through an authorised channel. The booking is real-name: it is made against a valid identity document, and a passport is an accepted one. One honest wrinkle: the official booking flow is built around Chinese ID fields, and overseas-visitor ticket types sold through authorised channels exist precisely for passport holders. Whichever route you take, the document number on the booking must be the document in your hand on the day.

STEP 3Enter once, on the document

Since November 2020 the resort has run on document entry: no document, no gate. Entry is single-use — you go in once, on the booked day, with the original document checked at the turnstile — so the day has to be planned as one continuous visit. Eat before you go in, carry what the children will need, and do not build a plan that assumes a midday exit and return.

STEP 4Arrive by intercity rail if you possibly can

The intercity railway is this park's front door. Zhuhai Changlong station has served the resort since August 2020; from Guangzhou South you ride the intercity line towards Zhuhai station (Gongbei) and change in the same station, or take a train that runs through to Zhuhai Changlong on the airport line. From the platform it is an eight-to-ten-minute walk to the park, or a short bus, taxi or resort shuttle hop. City buses 14, 86, K10, K11 and Z55 stop at the resort for arrivals from inside Zhuhai.

STEP 5Cross-border arrivals, simplified

The park sits in Hengqin, directly across the water from Macau, and it pulls visitors from three border systems. From Macau, cross at Hengqin Port — a 24-hour crossing right in the park's neighbourhood — then take a taxi or the resort's free shuttle. From Hong Kong, the bridge shuttle bus runs about 45 minutes to the Zhuhai side of the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge, then it is roughly 40 minutes by taxi; direct cross-border coaches from Hong Kong to the resort hotels skip the second change entirely. Count the border crossing itself in your timing — the park ticket solves none of it.

STEP 6Go to the whale shark tank first — and again later

The Whale Shark Aquarium is the reason this park exists, and it is at its best early: 22.7 million litres behind a single acrylic panel 39.6 metres long and 8.3 metres high — still, panel for panel, one of the great aquarium windows on earth. Go straight there at the 10:00 opening, take it slowly, and then come back for a second, shorter visit later in the day. The crowd flow, the light and the animals are all different on the second pass, and the second pass is the one most day-trippers never get.

STEP 7Read the records with their date on

The five Guinness titles were certified at the opening in 2014, and they were real. They are also dated: the world's-largest-aquarium and largest-single-tank titles moved in 2023 to Chimelong Spaceship, in this same resort, with about 75.35 million litres of water and a single tank of about 56.45 million litres. Ocean Kingdom's whale shark tank remains among the largest single tanks in the world, and the park's 2015 Thea Award — the first ever won by a Chinese theme park — does not expire. Enjoy the scale; just refuse any seller who quotes 2014 in the present tense.

STEP 8Ride between the aquariums

Between the aquariums, the park runs eight themed areas and fifteen headline attractions, including three coasters and two water rides. The Parrot Coaster — a B&M wing coaster on nearly 1,300 metres of track — enforces the park's one fully published height rule: nobody under 1.32 metres, nobody over 1.95 metres. Everything else publishes its own limits at the ride and in the official visitor notice. Remember that zones close before the park does — some areas stop around 19:30 — so ride early and aquarium late, not the other way round.

STEP 9Let the day's announcement run the day

Chimelong publishes the day's operating and performance announcement on its official channels, and the Chimelong Tourism app and mini-programme carry the day's hours, show times, map and notices. The nightly ocean fireworks show over the central lake is included in the ticket and runs daily, weather permitting. Build the day around the printed show times rather than wandering between them — in an aquarium park, the performances are the skeleton and the exhibits are what you hang on it.

STEP 10Finish with the shuttle or the last train in mind

The resort's free shuttle buses link the hotels with Ocean Kingdom through the day — the Hengqin Bay Hotel line runs roughly 08:30 to 21:30 at 15-to-30-minute intervals, adjusted to park hours — and dedicated buses serve Gongbei, Jiuzhou Port, Zhuhai Airport and Hengqin Port. If you are sleeping in the resort, the last shuttle is your deadline; if you are leaving Hengqin, the intercity station's last trains matter more. Decide which one governs your evening before the fireworks, not after them.

Where the records and the fine print catch people out

'World's largest' — with a date attached, or not at all

Any source — including plenty of current marketing — that still calls Ocean Kingdom the world's largest aquarium in the present tense is quoting 2014. The title, and the largest-single-tank title with it, passed to Chimelong Spaceship in 2023. The honest sentence is the one this guide uses: five records certified at the 2014 opening, two of them since surpassed by the park's own sister next door, and a whale shark tank that remains one of the largest single tanks in the world. If a listing cannot date its superlatives, discount everything else it says.

Peak prices live only inside the booking system

The official pages define the day types — regular, specific, peak — but peak-day prices are set inside the booking system and are not published as a fixed table, and family-bundle prices in media tables are snapshots from the day they were compiled. Any price in this guide is the official regular/specific structure; the number at your checkout is the number you pay, and a peak-day surprise is a reason to shift the date, not to argue at the till.

The official passport checkout is the weak joint

The passport is an accepted document and document-based entry works — that much is official. What could not be fully verified is the complete self-service flow for a foreign passport inside the official website and app, whose booking fields are built around Chinese ID numbers. The practical route for most overseas visitors is the overseas-visitor ticket sold through authorised channels, entered on the same passport. Do not buy from unauthorised sellers: a real-name, single-entry, document-checked ticket cannot be transferred to you by a stranger.

Priority passes have no published price

The park sells priority products — its Kuaiquda priority-access service for headline rides and theatres, and premium guided experiences with VIP entry lanes — but publishes no fixed price list for them; prices surface by date inside the official booking system. Figures quoted on blogs could not be matched to any official tariff, so this guide prints none: check the price for your date in the official system and decide there, not from a screenshot.

Ride rules beyond the Parrot Coaster

Only the Parrot Coaster's limits (1.32 to 1.95 metres) were verified line by line from the park's official attraction page. The other coasters and water rides publish their own height and accompaniment rules in the official visitor notice and at each ride entrance, and those are the versions that bind on the day. Families should read the visitor notice before promising children any specific ride beyond the aquariums.

FAQ: Can I come from Macau just for the day?

Yes, and many visitors do — Hengqin Port is a 24-hour crossing in the park's own neighbourhood, with taxis and the resort's free shuttle on the Zhuhai side. But two different things are being solved: the park ticket gets you into Ocean Kingdom, and your China entry status at the port is a separate question with its own rules. Solve the border first, then the park.

FAQ: Is the whale shark tank still worth it, now the records have moved?

Yes. The whale shark tank is still one of the largest single aquarium tanks in the world, the viewing panel remains extraordinary, and the park around it — 12.63 million visitors in 2024, more than any non-Disney, non-Universal park on earth — is not coasting on a 2014 press release. What changed is only the headline: the very biggest tank in the resort now sits at Chimelong Spaceship, which is a separate park with a separate ticket. If breaking records is the point of your trip, do both; if one great aquarium day is the point, this one still delivers it.

FAQ: Ocean Kingdom or Chimelong Spaceship — did I book the right park?

The names are close enough to cause real booking errors, so check the product name character by character at checkout. Ocean Kingdom is the original 2014 park: eight themed areas, the whale shark aquarium, coasters and the fireworks lake. Chimelong Spaceship is the newer sister park in the same resort — the current record-holder — with its own ticket. A resort hotel booking does not merge the two, and neither park's ticket opens the other.

FAQ: Can I leave for lunch and come back in?

No. Entry is by the booked document, once. There is no in-and-out privilege to design around, so anything you need — medication, layers for the air-conditioned halls, the children's patience supplies — goes in with you at the gate. The resort shuttles and hotels are for before and after, not for a midday reset.

The classic mistakes, collected

Booking the sister park by mistake. Turning up from Macau or Hong Kong without counting the border crossing in the day. Believing a present-tense 'world's largest aquarium'. Promising a 1.25-metre child the Parrot Coaster. Assuming a bundle price from a blog is today's price. And wandering the exhibits at random while the printed show schedule — the day's actual skeleton — runs without you. The night before fixes all six.
